A Virginia man, Brendan Banfield, faces trial on Monday for aggravated murder, accused by prosecutors of an elaborate double-murder scheme to frame another man in his wife's stabbing.
Mr Banfield, who had a relationship with the family’s au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, has pleaded not guilty. The charges relate to the February 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at the Banfields' northern Virginia home. Court records state Mr Banfield and Ms Magalhães were present. On the day, they told officials they saw Mr Ryan, a stranger, stab Christine Banfield after entering the house, then they each shot the intruder.
