Hurricane Lowell: Hawaii battered by severe gales and heavy rain

  • Hurricane Lowell triggered severe gales and heavy rain that battered the western islands of Hawaii on Tuesday, leaving thousands without power and tearing up stretches of coastal roads.
  • The island of Kauai suffered widespread blackouts that affected nearly 35,000 members, according to the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.
  • Hawaii Governor Josh Green closed schools and government offices across three islands, with around 300 people staying in shelters on Kauai.
  • Meanwhile, dangerous surf conditions created by the remnants of Hurricane Marie are expected to linger for several days along the Southern California coast.
  • It comes after Tropical Storm Lala brushed past Hawaii and stirred up landslides last month, washing away about 100 homes and causing widespread power outages.
