As Hurricane Helene continues to wreak havoc across several states, the death toll has tragically surpassed 100 individuals. The latest update from official sources on Monday morning confirmed that at least 102 people have lost their lives due to the destructive storm.

The impact of Hurricane Helene has been particularly devastating in North Carolina, where 42 fatalities have been reported, making it the state with the highest death toll. Among the recent casualties are five individuals from Henderson County and a sheriff’s deputy from Macon County.

The fallen deputy, identified as courthouse security officer Jim Lau, met a tragic fate when he was swept away by floodwaters during his lunch break on Friday. Described as a dedicated and hardworking individual, Lau's untimely death has deeply affected the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, with colleagues mourning his loss.

The sheriff’s office paid tribute to Lau on social media, highlighting his commitment to his duties and willingness to assist wherever needed. His absence has left a void within the agency, emphasizing the profound impact of his passing.

The devastating consequences of Hurricane Helene serve as a stark reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of such events. Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by this tragedy as they navigate through this challenging time.
