ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center is eyeing two areas of disturbance that seem to be in a race to possibly become the first named storm of the year: Ana.
In its 8 a.m. Friday update, the NHC identified two systems with odds of development: a non-tropical low pressure area in the mid Atlantic moving southeast, and a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico heading toward Texas.
The first area of low pressure is about 450 miles east-northeast of Bermuda producing storm force winds and thunderstorms, said John Cangialosi, a hurricane specialist at the NHC. The storm has become organized in the last several hours, but has not yet taken on subtropical characteristics and remains unnamed.
