Hunt for man who threatened police at gunpoint suffers blow as detectives issue update

Detectives hunting for a man who threatened police officers at gunpoint have appealed for help after three suspects were released without charge.

The shocking incident took place at around 1.10am on Thirlmere Road, Everton, on Tuesday, August 9 when officers on patrol with the Matrix unit spotted a man wearing a balaclava. According to the force, as the officers approached the man he turned around and made threats before pointing a gun at them.

The suspect then fled along Rydal Street towards Breck Road. Three men were arrested in connection with the incident but were all told no further action would be taken against them last week, a police spokesman confirmed.

Detective Inspector Katie Coote added: "Although no further action will be taken against these men, we will still act on any new information to find those responsible for this dangerous incident against our officers. If you know anything which could assist let us know and we will do all we can to take action.

"This incident has only served to strengthen our resolve to keep our communities and our officers safe, and we are calling on those communities to help us bring this dangerous offender to justice. Your information or evidence could prove vital."

Speaking recently about that incident and other assaults on police officers, Tony Fairclough, chairman of Merseyside Police Federation, said: "The incidents that have been highlighted show the unpredictability of the work that police officers undertake on a daily basis.

"These incidents illustrate that police officers are often working in the most challenging, and sometimes dangerous situations."
