Hunt for heroes who saved woman from falling off Leeds M621 bridge

Two men have been branded "heroic" by West Yorkshire Police after saving a woman from falling off a motorway bridge.

On Sunday (September 18) around 6.30am police were informed that a woman was on the wrong side of the railings on the M621 footbridge, Leeds. She was on the edge of the bridge near Junction 6 for Belle Isle Road.

Two members of the public saw the woman was unstable and leaning over the bridge. They held onto her as she teetered over the edge before manging to bring her back behind the railings.

The motorway was closed in both directions while officers responded to the incident. Once the woman had been safely detained a short time later she was taken for mental health support.

She was then secured by two passing off-duty police officers before on-duty colleagues arrived. Senior officers are looking to formally recognise those involved for their life-saving actions and are keen to trace the two males.

Confirming the details of the incident, a spokesperson for WYP said: "Police are appealing to trace two heroic members of the public who saved a woman from a bridge over the motorway in Leeds at the weekend. Shortly before 6.30am on Sunday, police received reports of a woman on the wrong side of the railings on a footbridge over the M621 near to Junction 6 for Belle Isle Road.

"The motorway was closed in both directions while officers responded to the incident. Once the woman had been safely detained a short time later and taken for mental health support, it was established that two males had held on to her as she teetered on the edge before bringing her back over the railings.

"She was then secured by two passing off-duty police officers before on-duty colleagues arrived. Senior officers are looking to formally recognise those involved for their life-saving actions and are keen to trace the two males."
