Hungrybox Shakes Cody Schwab's Chair During Wild Super Smash Bros. Melee CEO Final

More than 20 years after its GameCube release, "Super Smash Bros. Melee" remains one of the most competitive fighting games in the world. Major tournaments still attract elite players. Online platforms have also helped keep its competitive scene alive.

One of the latest viral moments happened during the grand finals of CEO, a major fighting game tournament in Florida. Melee veterans Juan "Hungrybox" DeBiedma and Cody Schwab found themselves involved in an unusually awkward situation.

The two players had already met several times during the event. Hungrybox won their winners' finals match. That result sent Schwab into the losers' bracket. They later met again in the grand finals.

Hungrybox's Celebration Apparently Shook Schwab's Chair

The bizarre moment happened during the final game of their 15th match. Hungrybox had a three-stock lead over Schwab, who had two stocks remaining.

Then Schwab suddenly stopped playing.

The commentators initially seemed unsure about what had happened. A controller issue appeared to be one possibility. Hungrybox also looked confused as he watched Schwab instead of continuing to focus on the match.

While the players were trying to understand the situation, Hungrybox landed two hits. Schwab then shouted, "What are you doing?"

The strange exchange quickly turned into a viral clip. Without the surrounding context, the scene looked more like a comedy moment than a tense grand final. It has gotten crazier each minute for the viewers.

Cody Schwab Explains the Unexpected Pause

Schwab later explained the incident on X. He said Hungrybox became excited and moved his chair. The movement apparently shook Schwab's own seat and disrupted his concentration.

Match footage appears to show Hungrybox scooting his chair backward shortly before Schwab stopped playing.

Schwab said he asked for a reset because the unexpected movement had completely thrown him off. However, he also acknowledged that he did not think the interruption would have changed the final result.

Thanks to this context, viewers who were left confused before were now enlightened.

Why the Incident Became a Talking Point

Pausing during a competitive "Super Smash Bros. Melee" match can be a serious matter. Tournament rules may impose penalties when a player pauses without authorization.

The circumstances can also matter. In this case, Schwab described the interruption as accidental rather than deliberate.

His explanation suggested that there was no major personal conflict between the two players. Still, the unusual reset request sparked debate among members of the competitive Melee community.

The incident also showed how even a small disruption can become significant during a high-level match.

Another Memorable Tournament For Melee's Top Players

The chair incident was not the only unusual story surrounding the players at CEO, according to Polygon.

Hungrybox reportedly celebrated a tournament victory so intensely that he fainted afterward. Schwab also competed at the event while reportedly dealing with food poisoning.

Despite those circumstances, Schwab still reached the grand finals.
