Hunger for a revamp of 'friendly' shopping area to make area more appealing

People in Carlton have praised local independent businesses in the borough of Gedling but have said that they would like to see more shopping options in the area. Despite improvements being made to the Carlton Square car park, residents say a “revamp” of the area would be ideal.

Many people feel like Netherfield has better shopping options and prefer it to Carlton. Netherfield has the Victoria Retail Park and shops near Victoria Road. People in Carlton, which isn’t too far from the city centre, hope that more facilities will be given to the area to improve it.

Liz James, 54, has lived in Carlton for over 30 years. Speaking outside Carlton Square, she said: “It would be lovely to see Carlton Square get a revamp.

“I know that we have the car park now but getting the benches painted and just little things like that wouldn’t hurt. Overall, I do come here regularly, I use the Wilko a lot and I stop in every now and again at Just Delicious.”

Just Delicious is a local cafe at 13 Carlton Square. Liz who is currently unemployed continued: “There are plenty of local independent businesses here. People go to the green grocer all the time. It would just be better if the place looked appealing enough to shop.”

Not too far from Carlton Square is the Tesco superstore on Carlton Hill. Sarah Harrison, 39, feels like over the years, Carlton has provided more shopping options. Sarah said: “I do feel like shopping in Netherfield is better because of the retail park but Carlton does have more options than what it used to. There's Papa John's which I suppose appeals to younger people and Wilko is for all age ranges.”

Sarah who works part time as an IT support assistant continued: “We have this big Tesco where I do most of my shopping and if I can’t find something I need in Carlton, I’ll either go into town, Netherfield or online. I do think that this area [Carlton Square] just looks a bit dull and dark most of the time but people are really friendly around here especially in the newsagents.”

John and Sheila Vogan live in Gedling but come to Carlton often. John, 88, said: “We only shop for bits around here, we do our main shop at Morrisons, we’re not browsers. It’s not too bad around here, you can find what you need, it’s good enough.”

John and Sheila both remember some old shops that are no longer in Carlton like Fair Share. However John, who is now retired, feels like retail is dying out in most places you go to.
