Hungary coach Adam Szalai recovering after collapse during Nations League match

Hungary coach Adam Szalai is reported to be in stable condition after experiencing a medical emergency during their UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands on Saturday night.

The incident occurred shortly after the game began, prompting a halt of over ten minutes as Szalai was attended to and subsequently transported to an Amsterdam hospital for evaluation.

The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed that Szalai was conscious and stable following the incident.

In a positive update shared on social media, the 36-year-old expressed gratitude for the well-wishes, stating, “Thanks for the lots of messages, I’m doing well.”

The match resumed after the medical situation was addressed, but Hungary ultimately suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Johan Cruyff Arena.

Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo both converted penalties in the first half, with Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners adding goals after the break.

This loss left Hungary struggling in Group A3, while the Netherlands secured their place in the quarter-finals ahead of their upcoming match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following the dominant home display, the Netherlands currently sits second in the group, trailing Germany, who achieved a remarkable 7-0 victory over Bosnia. The German team showcased a strong performance with goals from Jamal Musiala, Tim Kleindienst, Kai Havertz, and a stunning free-kick from Florian Wirtz.

The incident visibly affected Hungary’s players, with captain Dominik Szoboszlai seen in tears on the pitch.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Szoboszlai said: “I just looked out on the bench, I watched the whole thing. He did so much for the national team and for each and every player that he deserves to fight for him on the field. When we held a meeting, everyone said that we should continue for him, for nothing else.”

While the Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman sent his best wishes on social media.

Writing on X, he said: “Qualified for the next round in the Nations League. Happy to hear Ádám Szalai is okay, wishing him a good recovery.” 🙏

Szalai, who has transitioned from a successful playing career to coaching, joined the national team’s staff in October 2022.
