Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga has been released from the hospital following a serious injury sustained during the Euro 2024 match against Scotland on Sunday. Varga fell to the ground after a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the second half of Hungary's 1-0 victory.
The Hungarian Football Association confirmed that Varga suffered a concussion and a broken cheekbone, requiring surgery. Varga expressed gratitude for the supportive messages and is now recovering at home after being discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.
Varga, who plays for Ferencváros, mentioned that he is not easily scared and has already reviewed the incident from Hungary's win. The Hungarian FA released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, announcing Varga's release from the hospital in Stuttgart and his ongoing recovery in Hungary.
Following Varga's injury, Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai called for a review of medical protocols, emphasizing the need for immediate medical assistance in such situations. UEFA responded by clarifying that the medical intervention for Varga occurred promptly, within 15 seconds of the incident, and followed standard medical procedures.
Despite the victory against Scotland, Hungary was eliminated from Euro 2024 after finishing behind Germany and Switzerland in Group A. The Magyars also missed out on qualifying as one of the best third-place finishers.
