Hundreds Reclaim the Night across Ayrshire in march protest to end violence against women

Hundreds took to the streets across Ayrshire to ‘reclaim the night’ as a safe space for women and girls.

The annual Reclaim the Night walks took place last night in North, South and East Ayrshire in a bid to tackle sexual violence and harassment against women and girls.

In Ayr, over 250 supporters braved the cold and - armed with banners and signs - marched in a three-mile loop, starting and ending at Ayr Academy, to raise awareness for women and girls’ right to walk safely through our towns.

South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership said on their Facebook page: “Over 250 people braved the cold and walked the three miles round Ayr town centre to highlight the need for women and girls to feel safe.

“Thanks to Paul Scully for providing the music, and Councillor Laura Brennan-Whitefield and Amy from Ayr Academy for their insightful words to open the event which sent a very powerful message.

“And special thanks to Mariea and all the ladies from All Warriors Gym Ayr for providing a warm up and keeping the chanting going throughout.

“Together we reclaimed the night.”

The walks are part of the worldwide movement of 16 Days of Action to end violence against women, which started on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 and ends on Human Rights Day this Saturday, December 10.

Each council have organised a variety of events in support of the 16 Days campaign including violence prevention workshops, talks, conferences and creative writing group sessions.
