Hundreds of volunteers celebrate success of the Scottish Pantry Network

Hundreds of volunteers from across Scotland came together for an event celebrating the hard work and dedication of those helping to run The Scottish Pantry Network (TSPN).

Last Thursday marked the beginning of Volunteers’ Week - an annual celebration of the contribution of millions of people making a difference in their communities throughout the UK.

Volunteers at TSPN, were invited to attend Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel to acknowledge the hard work that has been put in to help grow the pantry network.

There are more than 300 volunteers throughout the country at the pantries set up in Glasgow, Inverclyde, Ayrshire, East and Midlothian and have the main aim of redistributing food that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Anyone can attend their local pantry and obtain £10 to £15 worth of food for just £2.50.

During her speech on Thursday night, Mandy Morgan, who founded the network, said pantries wouldn’t be possible without these individuals.

She said: “I am reminded of the remarkable journey that the pantry network has taken over the years.

“It has grown from a small idea to a powerful force, touching the lives of countless individuals and communities. This growth and the vital role our pantries play in our communities stir deep emotions within me, and it is all because of you, our incredible team.

“Each day, you pour your hearts into your work, tirelessly striving to make a positive impact. Your unwavering commitment has propelled our pantries to success and has made a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve. You are the backbone of our pantry network, and we stand in awe of your resilience, compassion, and dedication.”

TSPN which will turn three years old this September has also benefitted from more than £1 million investment from Glasgow City Council.

It has also received support from Westminster as well as the Scottish Government.

Speaking after the event, Ms Morgan, said: “The event, which marks the start of Volunteers’ Week, was really well attended and we had about 100 people attend where from East Lothian, Mid Lothian, Glasgow and Ayrshire as well came along.

“The Leader of Glasgow City Council, Susan Aitken, was also in attendance who gave a speech, endorsed everything that the pantry network does as well and told of how the council has invested £1.7 million in the development of the pantries.

“We are pleased to see that this is an organisation that is not even three years old yet which has representation from the largest council in Scotland, Westminster and the Scottish Government which is really amazing to see.

“We are all looking forward to seeing what comes next for our pantries.”
