Hundreds of people apply for a 'free home' for a year - despite the major catch

More than 500 interested applications have registered for a 'free home' - despite there being a major catch.

An island in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of under 200 has seen an overwhelming response to their offer of free accommodation for one year.

The stunning 'middle isle' of the three Aran Islands, Inis Meáin, Ireland started the brand new initiative at the end of July - where they offered one family opportunity to live on their scenic island with no rent to pay.

GalwayBeo reported the single slot on the island offered had over 560 applicants in just over two weeks as the islanders now have the tough choice of picking the lucky family.

However, the offer stipulated that only families with children of a school-going age may apply, and that families also must be open towards learning and engaging with the Irish language.

This is undoubtedly enticing as 12 months free of the shackles of rent payments would certainly make a huge impact on any family's finances.

Many may not be aware that the island houses a pre-school, primary school, and secondary school.

Dara O’Madaoin from Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin, spoke to Galway Bay FM about the "brand new" remote working hub they now have on the island to accommodate anyone who can work from home.

Dara also highlighted the many "employment opportunities on the island."
