Hundreds of new apartments proposed just metres from 'abomination' tower

More than 250 new apartments in Northern Quarter could be built just metres from the site of a highly controversial 33-storey residential tower, after a plans were submitted to the council.

If approved, 267 new flats will be built on land bordering Tariff Street and Port Street, which is currently a bomb-site car park. Developers Marco Living and Axis Real Estate hope Manchester City Council's planning committee will make a decision on the proposals in February.

The two buildings will be 11 and 10 storeys each, plans show. They will contain one, two and three bedroom apartments, private gardens, roof terraces and roof top amenities would be created, BusinessLive reports.

Port Street is no stranger to controversial developments. Earlier this year, a 481-apartment scheme off Great Ancoats Street, 33 storeys tall was approved.

That was despite it being branded an 'abomination' by residents. Speaking on behalf of the Royal Mills Residents' Association, one representative said at the time: "As it stands, taking one storey off doesn't cut it at all. They need to take at least 15 storeys off.

"We don't have an objection to it being 20 storeys if needs be, but another 13 storeys would have such an impact on the buildings around it. Aesthetically, it doesn't look right. We're a residential area. And the fact that there would be a shadow across the school when the kids leave at half past three is an absolute abomination."

The plans for the shorter towers at the other end of Port Street have been designed by Leach Rhodes Walker Architects. Marco Living has been in business since 1968 while Axis Real Estate was co-founded two years ago by Russ Worthington and Nick Mullins.
