Hundreds of flights cancelled as snow hits airport schedules including at Heathrow

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled in the UK and parts of Europe as a blast of Arctic weather brings travel chaos.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport cancelled 450 ‌flights on Monday morning due to ‌snow and icy weather and expected ‍that number ‍to rise ‍throughout the day, Dutch news agency ‍ANP reported citing the airport.

Three flights from Heathrow to Aberdeen, Stockholm and Copenhagen - all scheduled to depart at 6.40am - were cancelled, along with a 7am flight to Amsterdam and an 8.15am flight to Aberdeen. The later 8.40am flight to Amsterdam was also cancelled.

A few flights from London Luton have been slightly delayed, including the 8.30am flight to Gdansk and 9am flight to Glasgow.

Over at Gatwick, incoming flights from Belfast and Amsterdam have been scrapped this morning.

Despite the heavy snow in northern Scotland, most flights are still going ahead from Edinburgh and Glasgow, apart from those going to Amsterdam and Belfast.

The 7am flight Belfast from Glasgow was cancelled as is the 10.20am flight to Sumburgh in the Shetland Islands. The 8.20am flight to Amsterdam from Edinburgh Airport has been cancelled.

Multiple flights were cancelled from Liverpool John Lennon Airport after a blanket of snow covered the runway.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the airport said flights are subject to delay and there have been some cancellations due to the “wintry weather conditions”.

Hundreds of schools in Scotland have closed today as heavy snow blanketed Shetland, Orkney and parts of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire.

Scotland's Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop asked people to delay their journeys if they can.

She said: “We've already seen challenging conditions and freezing temperatures, with more snow and ice on the way for the same areas.

“Of course for many, Monday marks a return to work from the festive break. If you have to travel then please ensure your vehicle is winter ready and have a winter kit in your car.

“Follow Police Scotland travel advice. If you can delay your journey until the amber warning has expired, please do so.”
