Hundreds more inmates and staff could have been exposed to cancer-causing gas after government testing reveals nine prisons are battling to contain high levels of potentially deadly radon.

The Independent revealed in March that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) had recorded unsafe levels of the toxin at 42 prison and probation sites across the UK.
