Hummus lovers try to keep a lid on it

What a storm in a hummus pot (Open sesame? Sainsbury’s and Tesco drop lids from pots of hummus, 25 September). There is no need to “cover it with clingfilm or similar”. A saucer rested on top or a clean tea towel will suffice.

• I have already stopped buying hummus that does not have a single-use plastic lid. Pots with firm lids are better for stacking in the refrigerator and the contents keep better. They can also be used for storing small amounts of food. In addition, they are useful for food banks, so sadly are still needed. It is shortsighted of supermarkets to give them up.

• Re your article (‘Weekend warrior’ workouts may be as effective as daily exercise, study shows, 26 September), I will stick to the advice of a wise old GP when I was recovering from a serious illness decades ago: “Walking a mile a day is better than running 10 miles once a week.” Can’t run, jump or dance any more, but I’m still here!
