Human-elephant conflict on rise in Chhattisgarh; tribal man, two elephant die

RAIPUR: A villager was trampled to death in an elephant attack when he was returning with his friends from a local festival on Sunday in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh while the carcass of an elephant calf and another pachyderm were found in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve in Mungeli and Korba districts.

The elephant was electrocuted to death, the preliminary probe indicated amidst clear sign of human-elephant conflict on the rise.

Asaan Rathiya, 32, a tribal resident of Barbhouna village in Dharamjaigarh forest range was killed when he was crossing the dense region with few other people. While there were reports about presence of a huge herd of 55 elephants in the region and forest department sounding alert to not venture in forest region, Rathiya came across a giant pachyderm and got trampled to death. Others managed to escape and after raising an alarm in the village, the locals rushed towards the forest to chase away elephants.
