Hull FC's Cameron Scott on long road to Super League success

At 23, Hull FC’s Cameron Scott believes he’s finally arrived as a Super League player.

The athletic centre scored his first try in almost a year in Friday's 22-18 win at Leeds. An ankle injury and then an abductor tear meant he made just seven top-flight appearances last term. Scott was one of the most promising youngsters in his peer group, captaining England Academy to a memorable Test series defeat of Australia Schoolboys in 2018.

Other players from that squad have risen quickly to the top, including St Helens’ England star Jack Welsby, Leeds centre Harry Newman and Wigan’s Challenge Cup winning scrum-half Harry Smith. Scott, though, had to bide his time, including going on loan spells at Doncaster, York and Leigh. But with Hull captain Carlos Tuimavave sidelined, he’s started both their opening fixtures under new boss Tony Smith this term having also featured in the win against Castleford.

And Scott admitted: “I feel really good. It was important for me to catch the two games I played at the end of last year just for my mental state more than anything after missing such a large part. But I came in fresh in the off-season and worked hard. Obviously Carlos was struggling with a long-term injury and I feel like I have put my best foot forward.

“It took me probably longer to get to where I am - or where I was expected to get to - having quite a reputation coming through and captaining England (Academy). I’m not afraid to say it’s taken longer for me to get there. But I do feel I’m putting my best foot forward now. I’m still far from the finished product but I’d like to think I'm on my way.

“Tony came in with plenty of changes and everyone’s bought into that. That’s the way we need to keep moving forward. So far it’s proved evident.”
