Hull City vice-chairman outlines his European ambitions for Shelbourne

Hull City vice-chairman Tan Kesler says he wants Shelbourne to be battling for group stage football in European competition.

The English club recently acquired a majority stake in Shels for just over €2m.

They plan to use their position to bring the best Irish youngsters to Hull - and also to send players to the League of Ireland side that can have them competing in Europe.

“We wanted to create a multi-club ownership where we can not only compete on a different level, not just the League of Ireland, but also maybe a chance of European cups,” Kesler told HullLive.

“That gave us a little bit of a European reach for players who cannot come to England because of their work permit.

“We would like to have Shelbourne competing at a level where we can bring players in to help them get into the Europa League and at the same time be able to come to Hull as wildcards because of the new regulations (on overseas players). We have an advantage.

Hull’s Turkish owner Acun Ilicali will be in Dublin on Friday to discuss his reasons behind the purchase of the Tolka Park outfit.

Kesler added: “I'm on the board of Shelbourne as well so we're kind of overseeing their football operations.

“The chairman believes in the importance of Irish players because most of the clubs in England have Irish-descended players and they also have a proven pathway.

“We have an Irish player already in Harry Vaughan becoming a very big talent.

“We're going to try and find those local talents we can bring to Hull and a Championship and if possible Premier League market.

“We want to make them as competitive as possible while both clubs cherish the football talent.”
