New South Wales have struck early with the ball to remain in the ascendancy on day two of their must-win Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania in Sydney.

Scoring at just two per over Tasmania are 1-22 at tea, still 395 runs behind the home side at the SCG.

Sean Abbott clean bowled Caleb Jewell for eight as Tasmania set about pursuing NSW's 8-417 declared.

At the crease for the Tigers are Tim Ward on eight and Charlie Wakim on two.

NSW declared midway through the middle session after adding 145 to their overnight 3-272.

Middle-order batter Jason Sangha (54) and allrounder Chris Green (59 not out) both posted half-centuries on day two.

Opener Daniel Hughes was the mainstay of the innings, eventually dismissed for a career-best 178.

It was Hughes's eighth red-ball century and easily eclipsed his previous career-high of 136.
