Hugh Laurie compares House to Bach and Frida Kahlo in defence of hit drama

  • British actor Hugh Laurie , known for his role as Dr Gregory House, responded to a critic on X/Twitter who suggested that every episode of the medical drama series was repetitive.
  • Writer Janet Murray claimed that House episodes consistently featured the titular character wrongly diagnosing patients, nearly getting fired, then correctly diagnosing them and avoiding dismissal.
  • Laurie defended the show by explaining that attempts at alternative plotlines, such as House getting it right immediately or never getting it right, were either too short for NBC or unpopular with audiences.
  • He likened the show's structure to “variations on a theme”, drawing parallels with artists like JS Bach, Frida Kahlo and Henry Moore, suggesting that if viewers only saw “medical blah blah”, the show was not intended for them.
  • Despite his recent defence, Laurie has previously expressed disinterest in “reliving the show” or discussing it, as revealed by Dr Mikhail Varshavski, though a representative clarified that Laurie has not definitively ruled out a return to the role.
