Auburn and Georgia legitimately hate each other. It’s always been that was for, well, ever.
The two schools have one of the most storied rivalries in all of college football. There’s an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to it. This beef goes back more than a century at this point.
So, yeah, it was pretty confusing when Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze suggested that the two sides should be playing “out of love for each other than hatred for someone else.”
Yes, that’s a real quote and not just something Freeze pulled from a fortune cookie. He really said this to reporters. Out loud. About one of Auburn’s biggest rivals.

Look, man. That love stuff is great. Everyone needs love. Nobody should hate anybody. That’s how things are in real life.
But we’re talking about college football here. This is a rivalry game, Hugh. It’s a rivalry for a reason. These two teams — these two schools — they do not like each other. And that’s OK! That’s what makes it fun!
Fans really got on Freeze for this one. It’s hard to blame them — especially considering that this is Auburn’s first rivalry game of the season.
