Huge tailbacks on M60 as traffic held near Trafford Centre

Huge tailbacks were seen near the Trafford Centre as traffic was brought to a complete standstill on the M60.

Drivers were held on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the motorway between Junctions 8 and 9 on Sunday evening as emergency services were called to the scene.

It came after a vehicle and a trailer overturned in the middle of a carriageway, causing all three lanes to be closed for a short time, the MEN reports. Shortly afterwards, at around 9pm, one lane was reopened for long queues to slowly drive past the incident as two others remained closed.

Photos showed long queues of cars as drivers saw delays of around 30 minutes. Traffic Highways North West confirmed the incident and that all traffic was brought to a halt causing one mile of congestion into the evening.

Emergency services, including traffic officers remained at the scene. It is understood a trailer being pulled by a vehicle had flipped over and caused the incident near the Trafford Centre.

Work continued to make the scene safe in the the two other lanes as onlookers said that cars had taken the nearest exit to avoid becoming stuck in the congestion. National Highways tweeted: "Traffic is being held on the M60 anti-clockwise between J9 and J8 near Manchester due to an overturned vehicle and trailer.

"There is approximately 1 mile of congestion on the approach to the incident." Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for more information on the incident.
