A seven-foot mako shark shocked fishermen after it launched itself onto a boat in Maine during an expedition to observe the creatures.
In the viral video, a fisherman is seen attempting to reel in what he caught on his line, which was jumping out of the water at the start of the clip.
Overjoyed that he had caught something, the men on the boat cheered him on before the terrifying mako shark popped out of the water and crashed onto the boat's deck next to two fishermen.
"Holy f***," one of them said.
The camera showed one fisherman running away as fast as he could as the shark is wriggling and writhing on the deck of the boat.
The second man quickly climbed the ladder to the boat's top deck, with the shark continuing to thrash on the floor.
“A once-in-a-lifetime experience! Thankfully, no one on board was injured,” said a Facebook post written by Sea Ventures Charters, the owner of the fishing boat, the Lady Anne.
Shortfin mako sharks are some of the fastest fish on Earth and can reach swimming speeds of up to 45mph.
They also measure up to 12 feet and weigh up to 540kgs, according to Oceana who wrote that the species' athleticism "is not restricted to its swimming speeds."
It continued: "It is known for its incredible leaping ability and can be observed jumping to extreme heights (out of the water) when hunting."
The families and crew were on a shark fishing expedition off the Maine coast in August when the incident happened.
Speaking to The Post on Wednesday morning, Captain Dave Sinclair said the incident happened very fast.
“We’ve handled a lot of sharks over the years, but makos are special– they tend to act wild and crazy", he said.
On Monday, sunbathers in Brazil were also left shocked when a terrifying shortfin mako shark washed up on the shore.
It was filmed by a member of the public in Balneario Barra do Sul, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil on Sunday morning.
According to Eloisa Giareta, a researcher at a marine biodiversity recovery programme called Rebimar, the specimen was a shortfin mako shark.
