Boris Johnson is fighting a final battle to stay on as Prime Minister for another few months while a new Tory leader is chosen.
The Prime Minister is still clinging on to the idea that he can hang about in Downing Street while the leadership contest takes place over the Summer.
A new Tory leader is set to be in place by the party conference in October, with Johnson staying on in the interim.
But a number of MPs have furiously demanded that Johnson must go immediately after his incredible 24 hour siege in Downing Street where he refused to budge despite mass resignations from the government.
George Freeman, who was one of a number of ministers to resign on Thursday morning, said a new caretaker prime minister needed to take over “today” so that “ministers can get back to work...to try and repair the damage”.
He wrote on Twitter: “Boris Johnson needs to hand in the seals of office, apologise to Her Majesty and advise her to call for a caretaker prime minister.
“To take over today so that ministers can get back to work and we can choose a new Conservative leader to try and repair the damage and rebuild trust.”
Several other Tory MPs went online to demand the PM go today. But Downing St was briefing to expect Ministerial appointments to fill the ranks of vacancies left behind by over 50 resignations over the last two days indicating that Johnson was still in charge.
Downing Street confirmed that Johnson will make a statement on Thursday offering his resignation and that may offer some clarity.
Dominic Raab, the deputy Prime Minister, could take over a caretaker Prime Minister until a new party leader is elected if Johnson refuses toto stand down with immediate effect.
