A huge new Poundland store is set to open in Newport next year. The discount store will open its doors in early 2023 taking up the unit recently vacated by Unit Nine, across from New Look.
The chain will be the fourth Poundland in Newport adding to its existing stores on Commercial Street and the Kingsway Centre and at Newport Retail Park in Spytty. Pictures from the centre in recent days appear to show construction workers on the site and work ongoing. It is not known whether any of the existing Poundland stores will be impacted by the new store opening.
It comes just days after a new discount store opened nearby in the Kingsway Centre. MaxiDeals opened last week, replacing the old B&M store in the centre which saw its shelves stripped bare in October as shoppers queued to grab some last-minute deals after it announced a closing down sale. You can read more about that here.

Speaking about the opening of Poundland Simon Pullen, Centre Director at Friars Walk, said: "We’re delighted to be welcoming Poundland into the centre early in 2023. The new store will be located opposite New Look in the Mall. The exact opening date will be announced shortly."
Further down the shopping centre, the empty Debenhams store has come back into use for the first time since the department brand closed in May 2021 after over 240 years on the high street. In November it was announced that the 90,000 sq ft space will be temporarily used as a mass vaccination centre for autumn booster Covid jabs.
