Pupils set to return to the classroom today have been told they may not make their first day back after the summer holidays due to an issue with school transport across the region.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), who’s responsible for organising both North and South Lanarkshire council’s school transport contracts, told both councils just yesterday (Tuesday) that they have not been able to "organise buses" on a number of routes.
This will affect 26 primary and secondary schools across North Lanarkshire and an as yet unknown number of routes across the South.
The late notice has left both councils utterly perplexed with North Lanarkshire saying the move was "unacceptable."
A spokesman for NLC said: "The late timing of this notification is unacceptable and SPT has apologised and is committed to working with us to resolve the issue.
"Some services will not run on Wednesday, August 17.
"Affected schools have been sent a message. If your child's route is not on the table on the website, please assume that transport is on as normal."
In addition to this, NLC has also informed both parents that there is also some disruption to ASN provision and parents/carers are being contacted directly.
Schools affected in the North Lanarkshire area can be seen here.
A spokesman for SLC added: "SPT, which organises school transport, has informed us that they are struggling to make arrangements for a very small minority of our pupils who go to school by bus or taxi.
"If you or your child is affected, you will have been contacted by your school or the council to let you know.
"We will continue to work with SPT to resolve this issue."
