Huge emergency service response after four car smash on bypass

Police closed off a major road after a four-car pile-up.

The crash which happened today at 12.20pm on Formby Bypass saw emergency services rush to the scene. One driver was treated for minor chest injuries and taken to hospital according to the North West Ambulance Service.

Traffic was diverted northbound through Moss Side but one lane of the bypass was reopened. Two fire engines were at the scene and drivers were advised to find alternative routes while the bypass was closed.

No one was seriously injured in the crash and the scene has since been cleared away.

One witness said: "I have just driven past this on the way to Crosby... The middle car is smashed up, the back car is a big pickup truck and the front end is completely smashed in. Front car rear end is smashed in."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 12.20pm today, we received a report of a collision involving four vehicles. A road closure is currently in place for northbound traffic and motorists are advised to find an alternative route while the incident is dealt with."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Crews were alerted at 12.34pm and two fire engines were on scene at 12.36pm. All vehicles are on all four wheels and all occupants are able to self-extricate from their vehicles. Crews are conducting scene safety."
