Huge Edinburgh seafront restaurant opening with views over Firth of Forth

A massive Edinburgh seafront restaurant is set to open soon, with views overlooking the Firth of Forth.

The Joppa Rocks restaurant on Portobello Promenade was due to open last year but announced recently that they will be open in the coming spring months.

The seafood restaurant will also have a bar and a takeaway facility and a mezzanine level, around a large open atrium.

Portobello Promenade will be transformed by the new restaurant, on the grounds of the old public toilets.

The site was originally created as one of seven sewage pumping stations built by Lothian Regional Council.

The owners moved to reassure locals that they will be redeveloping the old bandstand, and ensuring that whole outside space at their restaurant will be refurbished and looked after.

The delay in opening has been due to the owners changing their plans and they had to apply to the council for new planning permission, but work started again in January of this year and they held a public consultation on January 25 with a view to the spring opening.

The local councillor Maureen Childs went along to the public consultation as they developers looked to allay any fears the public hold.

Local residents were reassured that although the premises has a 1am licence it is not set as of yet that they will even be closing this late.

The developers say it is more for one-off events, and have similar licences for other restaurants but never use them.

In a short list of FAQ’s released online they promised to look at all eventualities and most importantly promised that noise disturbance would not be a factor and they would not have a separate pub.

They said: “No, it will be a restaurant with a small bar, selling good quality wine. We will offer a couple of draught beers but we want to focus very much on the food. Portobello already has a good selection of bars to choose from, including the Boathouse. We promise to be an asset to our neighbours, not a nuisance.”

Unfortunately the owners are not yet ready to release their menu but say that diners can expect the very best langoustines and lobsters, served with good quality wines like Picpoul de Pinet.

Edinburgh Live will bring you all the latest news on the opening times and menus as they become available in the coming weeks.
