There are big changes planned to the A52 around Gamston roundabout as roadworks continue to cause delays for motorists.
The work began around the busy roundabout earlier this month, with lanes closed and queuing traffic for drivers as gas works are carried out.
However, this is just the start of the disruption, with a four phase improvement project being delivered by National Highways set to be completed by February 2023.
It will include a new 40mph speed limit on the approaches, exits and around the roundabout, to "improve safety on the approaches and pedestrian crossings".
Approaches to the roundabout will also be widened to provide extra lanes - this includes widening the A52 approaches into and out of Nottingham from two lanes to four.
The A6011 approach out of Nottingham will be expanded from two lanes to three, with new traffic lights added and the existing bus lane expanded.
The existing drainage, street lighting, road signs, road surfacing and lane markings will all also be upgraded.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "National Highways has been working in collaboration with Cadent Gas to ensure we minimise disruption to the community in the area around the Gamston roundabout, as well as drivers using the A52.
"Together, we have proactively reviewed our planned works to upgrade and future-proof the gas network at Gamston. We will continue to work together throughout the junction improvement work to ensure all the residents are kept safe and warm.
"This work will commence on January 10 with the diversion and replacement of pipework by the gas utility company, Cadent Gas.
"Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network and manages more than 80,000 miles of pipes, most of them underground, which transport gas to 11 million customers."
One driver labelled the current traffic situation a "nightmare", referencing queues on the approach to the roundabout caused by the ongoing works.
The current work is expected to take 12 weeks, with the main works scheduled to begin in April this year.
Phase 1 (April to May 2022)
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The first phase will need some night-time lane closures so we can clear the site safely. There will also be a full road closure early in Phase 1 over a weekend period so that we can install a safety barrier.
"This will take three nights, from 8pm until 6am the following morning. A suitable diversion route will be provided during all road closures and access will be maintained for residents."
Phase 2 (May to August 2022)
"Phase 2 will begin in May 2022," National Highways said.
"When we will be constructing a new lane on the westbound and northbound approaches to Gamston roundabout. During this phase, the traffic management will remain in place 24/7 for 3 months.
"Work will be carried out during the day using narrow lanes. On completion of Phase 2 in August 2022, there will be a full closure of the junction to enable us to safely switch the traffic management over for Phase 3.
"This will take three nights, over a weekend, and a diversion route will be signposted.
Phase 3 (August to November 2022)
A National Highways spokesperson continued: "Phase 3 will commence from August 2022.
"It will last for four months and see the installation of a new concrete barrier and a further westbound approach lane. Traffic management will remain in place 24/7.
"The safety barrier will enable operatives to work safely during the day, whilst maintaining two narrow running lanes in each direction."
Phase 4 (November 2022 to February 2023)
"Phase 4 will take place from the end of November 2022 to the end of January/early February 2023 and will consist of a series of night-time lane closures," they continued.
"Which will allow us to construct all the works which cannot be completed safety throughout the day. There will also be some night-time full road closures to allow us to resurface the junction."
