More than 900,000 Ryanair customers have been dealt a major summer blow as thousands of flights to Lisbon have been cancelled.
According to the Irish airline, they had to minimise their fleet on the ground in the Portuguese city from seven to four - affecting 150 staff members and thousands of customers.
A total of 19 routes have been scrapped from its schedule for summer 2022 after Ryanair reportedly entered heated discussions with Lisbon Airport over Covid restrictions and runway slots.
The budget airline has since apologised to anyone who will be affected by these cancellations and says they will be notified by email if it is related to their booking.
In a statement released today, Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, said: “Our latest efforts to ask Prime Minister Antonio Costa to help resulted in a total of zero responses.
“Ryanair is now forced to reduce its fleet of aircraft, from seven to four, in Lisbon this summer.”
He said it would result in a loss of more than €250 million in tourism revenue for the city of Lisbon this summer.
He added: "The loss of these 19 Lisbon routes and 5000 flights this summer, means that Lisbon’s post-Covid recovery will now lag behind other major EU capital cities."
