Huge area of grass and bushes destroyed by blaze

A huge area of grass and bushes were destroyed in a blaze in Wirral.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) were called to Grange Hill in West Kirby, Wirral, at 5.27pm on Tuesday, August 9, following reports of a fire. Once three fire engines arrived at the scene they found a 200mx50m section of grass well alight.

Firefighters also spotted another area of grass on fire, closer to Leigh Road, and requested backup at around 5.29pm. Another fire engine arrived at the scene shortly after and found another 100mx100m square of grass alight.

Crews started using main jet and high-pressure hoses to get the fire under control. At around 5.45pm firefighters requested more backup as the fire spread to grass near Grange Old Road.

After another fire engine arrived crews started using four high pressure reels to get the flames under control. A spokesperson from MFRS told The ECHO nobody else is believed to be in the area, other than fire crews, and the ambulance service and police are not in attendance.

Video footage captured on a mobile phone shows smoke filling gardens near the fire. Pictures taken by an ECHO photographer show the devastating damage caused by the blaze, which was still being dampened down three hours after the fire began.

Huge areas where grass and bushes once were are now black, with some tree branches also being damaged. Grange Hill is a popular destination with West Kirby residents and visitors.

People often visit to walk in the woods, enjoy views across the River Dee and visit the war memorial and garden of remembrance. The area is looked after by Wirral Borough Council and The Friends of Grange Hill.
