Huawei GT3 Pro review: What you need to know about the latest smartwatch

Where once our watches would simply tell the time, we now demand far more and expect them to track our exercise, sync up to our phones and monitor our activity 24/7.

The latest Huawei addition to its smartwatch series - the GT 3 Pro - promises all of that and more.

Design

The brand’s new flagship smartwatch seeks to reinvent its predecessors’ design to become more streamlined, elegant and glamorous. Available in titanium and ceramic, with the ceramic edition being a smaller sized model, the GT3 Pro uses premium materials such as sapphire glass (renowned for being as hard and durable as diamonds) for the watch display so it’s highly scratch and shatter resistant.

The watch features a new interface with an ultra-clear larger screen and high-definition colour display. The 466 x 466 high-definition resolution makes watch data clear and easy to read, even in bright sunlight.

As someone who would typically find the crop of smartwatches on the market to be overly chunky on my smaller-than-average wrist, I was surprised with how streamlined the GT3 Pro is, especially considering the larger screen size. With the overall thickness of the watch reduced by 0.5 mm compared to the GT2 Pro, it’s deceptively lightweight and comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time.

Not only is the watch exterior designed to the highest degree, but it’s clear that thought has gone into the screen itself. I found there to be more customisable options with this smartwatch than others on the market and I liked the ability to pick a unique digital watch face design.

There are also small nuanced touches on each edition of the watch. The ceramic model has a flower dial that changes shape throughout the day to show the passage of time. It also features an elegant ‘Day and Night’ theme that changes at sunrise and sunset.

The titanium watch features a 3D rotating crown which makes zooming in and out as well as sliding through the various interfaces easy and quick.

Features

When it comes to a health and fitness smartwatch that does everything you want it to, we really can’t fault the GT3 Pro. This model comes with the added features of TruSeen 5.0+ data monitoring technology, and later in the year Huawei will launch ECG analysis, which makes tracking your heart health and blood oxygen levels more accurate.

Another standout feature of the GT3 Pro is its amazing water resistant capabilities. The watch has achieved ground-breaking diving-level performance as it supports depth of up to 30 metres.

As a gym sceptic, who largely walks around bewilderedly staring at intricate machinery, I was unsure how useful the fitness features of the GT3 Pro would be. However, the watch comes with over 100 workout modes from swimming to skiing - so it accurately tracks your activity of choice. It also has an intelligent running planning feature which helps you create a personalised plan based on your physical and running history.

Four-time Olympic Gold Medallist and Huawei wearables ambassador Sir Mo Farah explains to ES, “the GT3 Pro is really important for me when training - I need to be able to analyse and examine data such as how fast I ran, the distance covered and my heart rate. This wealth of data helps me then improve as I look at what I could have done better and set myself goals on my watch”.

(Huawei)

If fitness isn’t at the forefront of your mind, the GT3 Pro has many other features which cater for all your day-to-day needs. I found that the TruSleep 2.0 sleep monitoring algorithm, the stress tracker and menstruation cycle reminders particularly useful. All these features are fully personalised meaning that over time, as the watch gathers necessary data, it can provide tailored advice to suit your needs.

As with all smartwatches, the GT3 Pro seamlessly connects to your smartphone (compatible with iOS, Android and HarmonyOS) so you can access all your apps from the watch. You can also activate your device’s camera with the remote shutter feature as well as sync playlists - so you don’t have to feel weighed down carrying your phone all the time.

Verdict

(Huawei)

As a watch designed to maximise performance capabilities, it would suit people looking to develop their training and fitness more than those after a smartwatch for basic day-to-day activity tracking. Although the watch has hundreds of capabilities, it verges on the edge of the saying ‘less is more’ as the multitude of features can at times feel overwhelming.

However, if you’re after a smartwatch that looks just as chic and elegant as a mid-range analog watch but has many health and fitness capabilities that can be personalised to your needs, then the GT3 Pro is a great option.
