HSBC to close 69 stores with Merseyside branch affected

City Region bank branches will be affected after HSBC confirmed 69 stores will close due to a shift to online banking.

The bank said it would try to replace the affected branches with other banking services such as new ATMs and pop-up banks, the Mirror reports.

HSBC confirmed it is closing branches because customers increasingly prefer online banking. It said fewer than half its customers are active users of a branch and footfall was down 50% since 2017. Among the affected are Ellesmere Port, due to shut on September 15 and Bootle, due to close on October 6.

HSBC head of UK branch network Jackie Uhi said: “Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop ups and continued use of the Post Office network. Rather than a one-size fits all branch approach, it’s an approach built around the way different customers are choosing to bank in different areas."

Consumer group Which? has previously called for banks to pause all closures as many customers are left without access to cash. But banks say fewer people are using their physical stores. The full list of HSBC branches set to close and the date include:
