HRT medication can now be bought over the counter at highstreet pharmacy

HRT medication is available over the counter for the first time today.

Boots pharmacies are selling the drug Gina, a low-dose hormone replacement therapy aimed at post-menopausal women.

It follows a landmark ruling by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency that the tablets could be sold following a conversation with a pharmacist.

Gina supplies the hormone oestrogen.

A lack of oestrogen causes symptoms that affect an estimated six million women in Britain.

At least half of post-menopausal women are affected but many suffer in silence, reluctant to discuss taboo symptoms such as uncomfortable sex, dryness, soreness and itching.

The condition can even affect patients’ mental health. Gina is now available in Boots stores and online at £2.50 for a week’s dose.

It is due to be rolled out to pharmacies nationwide in the coming months.

Dr Paula Briggs, Chairwoman of the British Menopause Society, said: “We welcome the introduction of this product.

“Urogenital atrophy is one of the most common challenges women face after the menopause and this reclassification means they can now access a low-dose vaginal oestrogen which treats the underlying cause.”

Sanjay Verghese, VP of makers Novo Nordisk, said: “We’re committed to pioneering treatments that can change lives. People who were only able to get treatment from their GP now have Gina as an easily available option.
