How you can spend time noticing plants and wildlife on pavements in Nottingham

Nottingham has plenty of green spaces but the nature growing on our streets can often get overlooked. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to stop using chemicals on plants and appreciate them instead.

As part of the 30 Day Wild challenge, the Wildlife Trust is asking people to spend the month of June doing something wild each day in order to acknowledge the nature around us. One suggestion they have is to take more notice of the plants on our streets.

John Rattray, Head of Nature Recovery South at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, spotted a Peacock butterfly on his way to work in the city, perfectly enjoying the plants living in the pavements and basking in the sunshine. John also decided to take more notice of it and took a photo to record it and appreciate the wildlife on his commute to work as part of 30 Days Wild.

It is something we can all do, whether it is on our way to work or school. Just take a moment to notice nature and take a photo and use the internet to decide what species you think it is.

John went on to record the sighting on the Trust's Nature Counts website. This page enables you to submit your wildlife sightings to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, to help make better, more evidence-based conservation choices on nature reserves and beyond, informing the Nature Recovery strategy in Nottinghamshire.

It is also shared across other conservation-recording organisations to help build a wider picture across the country. Your records can be used by ecologists and scientists across the country to inform national policy decisions about nature and the environment, and national assessments of biodiversity.

Plus, a fabulous, easy way to notice nature and make a difference. Just by stopping, taking notice and a photo. If you would like to take part in 30 Days Wild during June, there is still time to get your free pack, either in the post or download a digital one, to be inspired with even more wild ideas to get involved with.
