How you can help the Turkey and Syria appeals after earthquakes kill more than 5,000

A number of appeals have been launched for in-need residents of Turkey and Syria, after earthquakes yesterday reduced parts of the bordering countries to rubble and dust.

The first quake - measured at 7.8 on the Richter Scale - struck in the early hours of Monday morning (6 February), while the second took place shortly just before 11am, according to multiple news outlets. The subsequent second quake was measured to hold 7.5 magnitude.

Reuters this afternoon reported that at least 3,400 have been confirmed dead in Turkey, while in excess of 1,600 in Syria have passed away through the natural disasters - with the countries left in tatters while search and rescue teams, as well as members of the widespread communities continue doing all that they can to assist.

Authorities in Turkey estimate that 13.5million were affected by the occurrences, with tremors said to have been felt as far as Cyprus, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon and Egypt. Italy also issued a tsunami alert for coastal populations due to the magnitude of the disaster.

Now, a number of appeals have been launched to provide aid to the countries in need - with charities and organisations pleading people to donate as and where they can.

Turkish and Syrian earthquake appeals:

British Red Cross -

The British Red Cross are asking for monetary donations to help provide emergency first aid and evacuate people to safety.

Oxfam -

Oxfam are attempting to provide water and sanitation, shelter and food support - as well as longer-term rehabilitation and reconstruction for the people of Turkey and Syria.

Christian Aid -

Christian Aid is currently working with partners in Northwest Syria in a bid to provide winter kits to people seeking shelter.

On their website, they say: "Every prayer, every gift, every action brings hope to people hit by disaster."

ActionAid -

ActionAid are responding to the crisis by providing food, shelter, medical aid, clothing, heaters and money to those who have lost their homes and been left on the streets.

Islamic Relief -

In Turkey, Islamic Relief are prioritising providing emergency medical assistance, shelter and cash grants, while in Syria, the team are providing health and medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, and additionally blankets and tents to those left homeless.

Save the Children -

In Syria, StC are working to assess damages and provide support to children in need. While in Turkey, the organisation is looking to assess needs and establish a response team to help support the national emergency response of the region.

Human Appeal is currently working in close coordination with local authorities across Syria and Turkey, participating in humanitarian efforts to bring assistance to families who need it most.

Action Against Hunger has launched an emergency appeal in response to the earthquakes, with teams currently investigating how they can best provide support for the families affected.
