How you can avoid an infestation in your house as swarm of flying ants descends on Ireland

Today, a swarm of flying ants arrived in Ireland as the phenomenon known as nuptial flight began.

Although the mating season, which is often called "Flying Ant Day", isn't usually due until the end of July and early August, experts have said it changes each year.

Thousands of these critters seem to have already swarmed homes and businesses in Dublin as many post grim photos online of the infestations.

These winged insects usually enter properties in search of food and are mostly harmless, but while they are unlikely to bite, they can quickly become a nuisance to those working and living in the building they occupy.

If they find a food source, ants can lay down a pheromone trail which attracts other ants to the area - only growing the existing swarm.

Irish homeowners may see more of these ants over the next few days as the weekend is set to bring hot and humid weather, the exact conditions they love.

They reportedly grow their wings but the female critters later bite them off to provide themselves with extra protein.

So, if you’ve had an issue in the past, or just want to ensure they don’t arrive in your home this year, here are some ways you can protect against an infestation:

  • Clear up any food or liquid spillages immediately
  • Sweep up any food crumbs from under your kitchen appliances and units
  • Store your food in airtight containers wherever possible
  • If you have a pet, clear away any food that isn’t eaten straight away
  • In the garden, keep your compost enclosed and make sure all rubbish bins have tightly sealed lids
  • Seal cracks and crevices around doors and window frames
  • Keeping windows and doors shut is one of the most effective methods of preventing flying insects from entering your home or business
  • Installing a fly screen will prevent flying ants from entering your home whilst leaving windows and doors open
