How West Ham United could play 69 times in the 2022/23 season after 2021/22’s 56-game campaign

West Ham United could play as many as 69 games during their 2022/23 season across all competitions, smashing the 56 they featured in last term.

As well as the Hammers’ 38 Premier League ties, David Moyes’ side played 18 other matches in all competitions, a campaign where West Ham reached the semi-finals of the Europa League. In Europe, the Hammers had to play 12 times including six group games and six in the knockout rounds, with the Irons eliminating Sevilla and Lyon before being knocked out in the last four by eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

West Ham also played six games across the FA Cup and Carabao Cup combined, reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup before getting knocked out by Southampton, having lost in the Carabao Cup’s quarter-finals to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season.

The Irons’ qualification for the last qualifying round of the Europa Conference League means that they will play at least two matches next month, but will need to win over two legs to secure a spot in the group stages.

To go on and win the competition, West Ham will need to play up to 17 matches in their debut campaign in the Europa Conference League. However, if the Hammers got through their group stage as group winners, they would go straight into the round of 16 and would not have to play a two-legged play-off knockout round match in February.

Due to the World Cup, the schedule of the Carabao Cup has been altered for the upcoming season. West Ham’s third round tie takes place in the final week before the season pauses for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the competition restarting just days before Christmas and only a couple of days after the final of the World Cup. If the Irons went on a run to the final, they would play six matches in the competition.

Like the Carabao Cup, a run to the final of the FA Cup would add six games onto the club’s busy season. Their third round tie takes place on the first full weekend of January after the club’s festive league fixtures. However, West Ham could be forced to play replays in the third and fourth rounds of the competition if they draw their matches.
