How well used new e-scooters in Nottingham really are

Around 2,100 e-scooter journeys were made in Nottingham every day in January, which is treble the amount in the same month compared to a year ago.

Stats from Superpedestrian, the company which runs the Wind e-scooters, show that, in January 2021, 720 journeys were made, compared to 2,100 last month.

Before Christmas, the old yellow model operating in Nottingham was replaced with the "industry-leading" LINK e-scooter from Superpedestrian.

The new vehicles feature a range of major changes in a bid to boost safety for users and general public.

The company says tens of thousands of short car trips have been avoided last month alone.

91,475 miles were covered in Nottingham in January 2022, which is more than 11 trips around the circumference of the Earth.

Jean Andrews, policy director (UKI) at Superpedestrian, said: "The Nottingham shared e-scooter programme is the most popular service in the UK.

"The fact that usage is increasing clearly shows early high levels of use weren’t due to novelty factor.

"We’re proud that our new vehicle is supporting even more people in Nottingham in their daily lives."

New technology is being introduced in Nottingham in a world-first to automatically slow down or stop dangerous riding, such as if it is being ridden on a pavement or recklessly.

It works using precise location data so it can react in real time.

While the scheme is in Nottingham, it does not cost Nottingham City Council or taxpayers any money.

Haya Verwoord Douidri, vice president of global market expansion, policy and strategy at Superpedestrian, said: "Our own customer survey data shows that our riders use our shared services to directly replace car journeys on 30 percent of all trips.

"This means that, in January alone, our shared e-scooter avoided more than 27,500 miles of short car journeys in Nottingham, bringing benefits in improved air quality and reduced congestion to all residents."

The e-scooters were introduced as a trial in October 2020 and this was originally due to last for a year, but the trial was extended to November 2022.

There are hopes that e-scooters could eventually serve all of Nottinghamshire.

Superpedestrian is hosting free-to-attend safety drop-in sessions at Sneinton Market on Thursday (February 17).
