How Wayne Rooney's DC United are faring after finishing rock bottom of MLS last season

Wayne Rooney is enjoying a much improved season with DC United this year compared to the previous campaign.

Rooney was appointed as head coach at DC in July last year, replacing interim Chad Ashton who was standing in after the departure of Hernan Losada. However, things didn't go too well in his first few months in the job. The 37-year-old had previously spent one year with the club as a player from 2018-19. After having two years at Football League team Derby County, where he progressed to becoming their manager, he returned to DC last summer as their new boss.

Even though there was new found excitement with Rooney’s return, it could not stop DC from finishing rock bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference with just 27 points from their 34 games. Going into the 2023 season, improvement was necessary for everyone connected with the club. And with a third of the season now complete, it seems DC are achieving that goal, at least.
