With five Tour de France titles to his name (including the last three editions) and the 2024 Giro d'Italia, 'Pogi Star' was looking to join the ranks of Eddy Merckx, Alberto Contador, Chris Froome and last year's winner Jonas Vingegaard as only the ninth winners of all three Grand Tour events.
But that destiny was dashed prematurely on Stage 8 with Pogačar suddenly shown by the cameras sitting on the floor with a broken collarbone after a fairly innocuous looking crash. With his Vuelta ended it's not immediately clear which of the field will present the strongest challenge to fill the vacuum.
Compatriot Primož Roglič is a four-time winner event and success this year would see him the outright record holder. Aged 36, it's hard to imagine him keeping up with the pace and endurance of his juniors over the total of 3,275km covered by the 21 stages. But he's now bang in contention as they head into the second half of the tour.
Oscar Onley and Richard Carapaz are two names the bookies had at the shortest odds apart from Pogacar at the start of this Grand Tour, and both have made strong starts. But it's currently Enric Mas who leads the general classification, looking to capitalize and become the first Spaniard to win the event since Alberto Contador 12 years ago.
Friday's Stage 13 (4th September) starts at 12.20pm local time — so that's 6.20am ET / 11.20am BST — and runs from Almuñécar to Loja. It's the second in a grueling run of four mountainous stages before Monday's second rest day, and takes in three categorized climbs over the course of its 192km. So that's plenty of opportunity for attack for the breakaway specialists.
