Sam Burns leads the way on 10-under ahead of Round 4, two strokes clear of Ryan Fox and Kim Si-woo, who are tied on 8-under.
Burns, Fox and Lucas Herbert have each shot 62 this weekend, equalling the lowest round in men's major history. Only five players had achieved the feat previously.
Herbert is in the mix too, tied with Ryan Gerard on 7-under, while Ludvig Aberg, Jackson Suber and Bryson DeChambeau are each one stroke back on 6-under. At 5-under, local hero Tommy Fleetwood is very much in the frame too, and will be cheered all the way to the clubhouse.
It's the American bruiser, however, who's stolen the show in Southport. Many had anticipated that DeChambeau would become the first multiple major winner since 1990 to miss all four cuts. Instead, the criticism has only served to fire him up.
The 32-year-old was one stroke off the lead when he walked off the 18th on Friday, only to be pulled up for "inadvertently improving his lie" when he sent his ball into thick rough on the 5th. Although a visibly irate DeChambeau claimed innocence, the footage clearly shows him trampling down long grass close to his ball.
Rory McIlroy has since hit out at DeChambeau for holding The Open "hostage", revealing that his heated exchange with the officials significantly delayed the release of Saturday's tee times.
Matt Fitzpatrick, Aaron Rai and Justin Rose, who'd entered the tournament with high hopes, each missed the cut.
