Sam Burns will go out last on Sunday, at 2.20pm local time, leading by two shots in quest of his first Major title.
He will be paired by Ryan Fox, who ensured Moving Day lived up to its reputation by moving 50 places up the leaderboard on Saturday with his third round 62. That 62, which equalled the lowest round in men’s Majors, is the third 62 this tournament.
With players capable of extracting low scores from this layout, this Open is indeed wide open. The top 10 on the leaderboard are separated by only five shots and nineteen players are within six shots of the lead.
The top 10 contains only one player, Bryson DeChambeau, who has won a Major. Who will handle the tension and conditions the best? If they stumble, there is also a bevy of Major champions tied in 11th, six shots off the lead, in Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Shane Lowry and Hideki Matsuyama.

Defending champion and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler entered the year’s final Major as favourite. However, he has not won since January and missed the cut at last week’s Scottish Open, ending his remarkable streak of 78 consecutive cuts made. A successful title defence would also end a long wait for a repeat Open champion, with the last back-to-back winner being Padraig Harrington at Royal Birkdale in 2008.
Rory McIlroy already has a Major victory this season and finished tied fourth the last time The Open was held at Royal Birkdale in 2017, although the course has undergone significant changes since then. That year’s championship was won by Jordan Spieth.
Matt Fitzpatrick, who finished tied fourth in last year’s Open, arrives in strong form with three victories already this season and is bidding to become the first Englishman to lift the Claret Jug since Nick Faldo in 1992.
Chris Gotterup, third at last year’s Open at Royal Portrush, also heads into the week with three wins in 2026 and will be looking to build on his recent Major form.
Justin Rose returns to the venue where he announced himself on the world stage, finishing fourth at Royal Birkdale in 1998 as a 17-year-old.
