Leigh Wood rematches Mauricio Lara in Manchester tonight in a bid to make a swift return to world champion status.
Wood lost his WBA featherweight title despite an impressive display in the first fight in his hometown of Nottingham back in February, boxing wonderfully before one vital lapse in concentration saw him floored by a monster left hook from ‘Bronco’ in round seven.
He had no qualms over taking an instant rematch and will hope to take advantage of a weight farce to wrestle back the lost belt on Saturday.
The WBA gold now lies vacant after Lara was stripped on the eve of the fight, having tipped the scales almost four pounds over the 126lbs featherweight limit.
That was after the British Boxing Board of Control did not permit the Mexican to carry out a weight cut in recent days, having been unhappy with his high weight at a regulation check earlier this week.
There had been doubts as to whether the bout would even go ahead, with Wood on championship weight but coming in with a major size disadvantage against a massive puncher in Lara. However, plans are proceeding as scheduled as things stand.
