Rivals France and Italy go head to head in a high-profile Nations League fixture tonight.
Zinedine Zidane will be out to continue his perfect start as Les Bleus boss in Paris, having opened his tenure as Didier Deschamps’ successor with back-to-back wins over Turkey and Belgium to take early control of Group A1.
Kylian Mbappe scored the only goal of the game against hosts Turkey last week while suffering a knee injury in the process that ruled him out for the rest of this extended international window, before a brilliant late individual effort from Michael Olise then produced another 1-0 victory in Brussels.
Now Zidane is set for his first home match in charge at the Stade de France against an Italy side who, still reeling from their inexplicable failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in succession, were brushed aside at home by Belgium in the first outing of Roberto Mancini’s second stint at the helm after he replaced Gennaro Gattuso in the aftermath of the saga involving first-choice option Andrea Pirlo.
However, they bounced back to ruthlessly dispatch Turkey 4-1 on Monday courtesy of efforts from Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi, debutant Michael Kayode - of Brentford - and Pio Esposito.
