They defeated tonight’s opponents with a tight comeback, as Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski both struck late on in both halves to hand Hansi Flick’s men all three points.

Atleti had gone ahead through Giuliano Simeone, Diego’s son, before Nico Gonzalez, a natural winger playing at left-back, was sent off on the stroke of half time.

In Europe, both sides came through English opposition to get here.

Barca battered Newcastle United 8-3 on aggregate, after a 7-2 mauling at the Nou Camp in the second leg followed a tight 1-1 draw at St James’ Park.

Atleti also decimated Tottenham in the first leg of their last 16 encounter, and while they were defeated 3-2 on the night in the return leg, they still won through 7-5 on aggregate.
