How to tame all animals in Hytale

While wandering the world of Orbis in Hytale, you’ll come across a wide variety of animals and birds spread across forests, plains, deserts, tundras, and more.

At first glance, it may seem like these creatures are potential companions or mounts, especially for players familiar with other games where you can use food items to lure animals, but it doesn’t work the same way in the game. If you’re using the same old methods from other sandbox games like Minecraft, you’ll quickly find they don’t apply here.

While you cannot tame animals in Hytale at the time of writing, you can still interact with wildlife in limited ways and make practical use of them. For example, carrots or Feed bags can be used to lure animals like rabbits and horses toward you.

After that, you can approach Horses, Skeleton Horses, and Rams and press E to mount them and travel across the map. This allows for fast movement between biomes, and it is the second fastest way to get around in the map, only behind using portals. One important thing to keep in mind is that once you dismount an animal, it will run away. To avoid having to chase it down again, make sure to secure it with fences before dismounting.

Most wild animals will run away when you go near them, but some of them can be lured near you using the Feed Bag. You can craft this at a Farmer’s Workbench, which can be made using a normal workbench. Once you have that, you can use it to make a Feed Bag. You’ll need 10 Wheat, 10 Essence of Life, and five of any vegetables or fruits to make it. You can use the Feed Bag to keep luring these animals to use them. You can also use cows to get milk from them once a day using the Milk Bucket, and rabbits don’t have a use yet as pets.

Other than that, wildlife currently exists as part of the game’s ecosystem, serving roles such as ambient creatures, sources of food resources, or hostile threats. However, players cannot yet befriend animals until the developer completes this feature in the game.

How to capture animals in Hytale

To capture animals in Hytale, you’ll need to advance your Farmer’s Work to level three and craft yourself a Capture Crate. You’ll need four of any Wood and 50 Essence of Life to make it. Once made, you can use it to capture babies of different animals, but there’s one in particular that is very useful currently, and those are the chickens.

Once you capture a chicken using a capture box, a hen icon will appear on top of the box to confirm it has been secured. You can then carry it back to your base and place it inside a fenced area. After that, build a chicken coop nearby. At night, the chicken will automatically go inside the coop, and by morning, you will find fresh eggs ready to harvest. These eggs can be cooked and used as a reliable food source.

Other than chicken, you can capture any type of non-hostile baby animals and keep them in your farm to enhance your collection. As more content gets added to the early access, the taming and capturing system should improve and bring in more animals.

We’ll update the piece if there are changes or additions to the taming/capturing system in the game. Next up, you can read our guides on bug bounty rewards and add multiplayer friends in Hytale
