With Edinburgh beating out the likes of London, Amsterdam and Chicago to be named the best city in the world to visit right now, we thought we'd put together a guide of the best things to do if you are spending a day in the city.
The capital topped the fifth annual Time Out Index, which was released this week, with the city ranking highly across the board and topping the global chart as the 'most beautiful' and 'walkable' city in the world.
Lauded as the perfect city break for visitors looking to "explore historic landmarks, architecture and scenic hotspots on foot", Edinburgh was also chosen for its extensive and diverse dining and drinking scene, which Time Out say is "ever-evolving", with heaps of new things to do.
So, should you be spending 24 hours (or longer) in this magical city, here are some of things you might want to check out.
Walks
If the weather is semi-decent then there are few better city walks in the UK than heading to Holyrood Park and taking a wee daunder up Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags, where the incredible view of the city at the top will blow you away.
Should that feel like too much of an incline then the equally rewarding Calton Hill also offers a panoramic view of the city centre.
Still feeling like something more leisurely? Then the walk on the Water of Leith from Dean Village to Leith is another cracker surrounded by beautiful scenery away from the maddening crowds of the city centre.
Attractions
Voted one of Trip Advisor's best-rated experiences in the capital, The Chocolatarium Chocolate Tour is a fun way to while away an hour or two by creating your own Scottish-themed chocolate – all while enjoying samples of intriguing products like haggis chocolate and gin chocolate.
Another of our favourites is Camera Obscura, which is found near to the Royal Mile and offers the chance to take part in over 100 illusions before heading up to their incredible Rooftop Terrace for wonderful views out over the city.
Food and drink
It'd be remiss of us to try and cram in every one of the unbelievable restaurants and bars you'll find in this city so we'll just pick out one or two get you started.
Whisky lovers of all levels will have a lot of fun at the newly opened Johnnie Walker Experience on Princes Street, where you'll learn all about the world's best-selling whisky and how it's made in a very fun way.
The Pitt is a street food market based in an industrial yard in Edinburgh's Leith area that packs in plenty of flavours and foods from some of Scotland's top vendors in an infinitely cool space.
History
OK, so everyone knows about the castle, it's right there dominating the skyline but it's not the be-all and end-all. Though if you must take pictures of it, why not head to the most Instagram-worthy spot? The Vennel stairs offer one of the best views of the castle and it's a bit of a hidden gem so it's the perfect way to make your friends jealous with some truly exceptional shots (to go along with your city ones from Arthur's Seat too).
Next up is a trip to the Museum of Childhood , ideal for children of all ages, the museum is free to enter and has hundreds of fascinating toys and items from the past that will leave everyone with a smile on their face.
Finally, explore Edinburgh's hidden past with a tour at he Real Mary King's Close which takes you underground and back to a time when people lived below the streets.
